THE SQUARE ... Oh my! Unusual yet Funny Movie!

(EN) - Thanks to my dear friend, I watched this movie sooner than I thought. And I'm glad that we did! As for the movie, I'm not sure how to describe it, but it certainly is an interesting one.

Here, let me share, both my opinion and one of the reviews² of this movie which I find quite close how I felt about it:

We all know what comfort zone means and how it makes us feel: safe and at ease. Be that as it may, we need to be aware of its limiting outcomes. Because, comfort zones yield only acceptable results, which is to say that when we choose to live in our comfort zones mostly, then we generally leave innovation and creativity outside, that we go on doing things the way we usually do, as if we're on autopilot. But, when we dare or are forced to leave these comfort zones, it's highly possible that we may face difficulties at first, but then we may very well be positively surprised to see its immense transforming power on ourselves as well as on our lives.

As the reviewer puts it, comfort zones govern our lives -we create them for personal use and on every level of the society. But in order to reach new grounds, we need to leave them. And if the zones end or vanish for some reason, the life as we have known can break down quite easily.

As for the movie, the reviewer continues, 'The Square' explores this theme via art world, and art can be seen as metaphor for individual's creative or spiritual side. The central character is a director of a museum, a nice guy who gets into trouble both in private life and professionally. The movie plays out like a situational comedy about polarities, in art, our lives and modern man in general. Through different scenes and events, we get to witness and contemplate about how modern man wants everything to be "simple" -black or white. But, there are always two sides to everything and you can't really have the one without the other. For example, we want the art to mean something and touch as deeply, but don't like to invest ourselves and open up for it. Or, we want to express ourselves freely, but can't necessarily tolerate others also doing this. Either, we want power, but we don't like responsibilities, etc etc.

Yes, the approach is rather artsy, but the movie is still pretty mainstream friendly, thanks to all the "comedy"; says the reviewer and I couldn't agree more. This long movie -almost 2 hours, which I wasn't really aware of, until I read this review- follows and examines the characters closely and relies on nuanceful performances quite heavily. However, it's a slow movie and when we think of the movies nowadays, this slowness has a potential to wear us down. Yet, it's an intriguing and quite powerful movie about what life and art mean, or can mean; that what art is supposed to do is to take us out of our comfort zones and make us feel something we have yet to understand.

In my opinon, especially when it comes to contemporary art, it's supposed to interact with people, that it's supposed to communicate ideas, either spiritually, philosophically or politically while exploring the nature of our perceptions.

Well... See, this is art... I started telling you about a movie, but I landed on my perceptions in real life...

Anyways... All in all, it was an unusual but a humorous movie... and as for me and for my friend, it was a well spent afternoon...

(TR) - THE SQUARE ... Of of! Alışılmadık ama yine de Komik bir Film!

Sevgili arkadaşım sağolsun, bu filmi düşündüğümden daha önce seyretmiş oldum. Ve iyi ki de seyretmişiz! Filme gelince, nasıl tarif edeceğimden çok da emin değilim ama kesinlikle ilginçti.

Şimdi izin verin, hem kendi fikrimi hem de bu film hakkındaki eleştirilerden² birini -ki benim de film hakkındaki hislerime oldukça yakın bulduğum bir eleştiri bu- sizlerle paylaşayım:

Hepimiz konfor bölgesinin ne anlama geldiğini ve bize nasıl hissettirdiğini biliyoruz: güvende ve rahatız. Öyle olsa da, onun kısıtlayıcı sonuçlarının da farkına varmalıyız. Çünkü konfor bölgesi sadece kabuledilir sonuçlar üretir; bu da demek oluyor ki, çoğunlukla konfor bölgesinde yaşamayı seçtiğimizde, o zaman genellikle biz de yenilikleri ve yaratıcılığı dışarıda bırakmış oluyoruz; ki, sanki oto-pilota bağlamış gibi, genelde yaptığımız şeyleri aynen yapmaya devam ediyoruz. Ancak yeni alanlara ulaşmak için, bu bölgeleri terk etmemiz gerekiyor. Ve eğer bu bölgeler bir sebeple sonlanır veya yok olursa da, o güne kadar bildiğimiz hayatlar da oldukça kolaylıkla yıkılabiliyor.

Filme gelince, diye devam ediyor eleştirmen; The Square bu konuyu sanat üzerinden keşfe çıkıyor ve sanat, kişinin yaratıcı veya manevi yönü için bir metafor olarak da görülebilir diyor. Merkezdeki karakter, bir müzenin yöneticisi; iyi de bir adam ama hem özel hayatında hem de profesyonel olarak başını derde sokuyor. Film, kutuplaşma/karşıtlık konusunda duruma göre -sanatta, hayatlarımızda ve modern insanın genel tavrında- bir komedi tadında devam ediyor. Farklı sahneler ve olaylar vasıtasıyla, modern insanın nasıl da herşeyi -siyah veya beyaz gibi- 'basit' e indirgemeyi istediğine şahit olup, bunun üzerinde düşünüyoruz. Fakat herşeyin her zaman iki yüzü vardır ve bir diğeri olmadan öbürüne gerçekten sahip olamayız. Mesela, sanatın bir anlamı olmasını ve bize derinden dokunmasını istiyoruz ama bunun için emek vermek ve ortaya çıkmak istemiyoruz. Veya kendimizi özgürce ifade etmek istiyoruz ama diğerleri bunu yaptığında ille de hoş görmek durumunda hissetmiyoruz. Ya da güç istiyoruz ama sorumluluklardan hoşlanmıyoruz, gibi gibi.

Evet, yaklaşım epey iddialı ama film, komedi unsuru sağolsun, yine de oldukça hoş içtenlikte, diyor eleştirmen ve ben de aynen katılıyorum. Bu uzun film -ki 2 saat kadar olduğunu bu eleştiriyi okumadan önce fark etmemiştim bile- karakterleri yakından takip ederek inceliyor ve ayrıntılı performansa da ağır derecede yaslanıyor. Bununla birlikte yavaş bir film ve günümüz filmlerini düşündüğümüzde, bizi sıkma potansiyeli de var. Ama yine de, hayat ve sanatın anlamı hakkında -ya da ne anlama gelebileceği hakkında- merak uyandıran ve oldukça güçlü de bir film; ki bu noktada sanatın, bizi konforlu bölgemizden alıp çıkarması, ve henüz anlayamadığımız bir şeyler hissettirmesi de gerekiyor.

Bana göre konu özellikle de modern sanat ise, insanlarla karşılıklı etkileşimde olması gerekiyor; öyle ki, algılarımızın doğasını incelerken onun manevi, felsefi ya da politik fikir alışverişinde de bulunması gerekiyor.

Yani... İşte, gördünüz mü, bu sanattır. Size bir film anlatmaya başladım ama sonra gerçek hayattaki algılarımla başbaşa kaldım...

Herneyse... Sonuçta, alışılmadık ama komik bir film. Ve benim için olduğu kadar arkadaşım için de gayet güzel geçirilmiş bir akşamdı...
